In 1986, David McLane and Jackie Stallone, mother of actor Sylvester Stallone, filled the wrestling world with colorful characters and comedy skits made up of actresses, models and dancers - all which kept the organization from being taken seriously. Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) was an all women's professional wrestling promotion, and lasted only four seasons.

During the 1980’s women’s wrestling was featured in the World Wrestling Federation. The WWF attempted to push women’s wrestling by crossing over into the mainstream with the Rock and Wrestling with music sensation Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter, recent Hall of Fame inductee. By the mid 90’s the WWF and rival World Championship Wrestling saw that women’s wrestling was losing momentum, and with the rise in popularity by WCW, Vince McMahon made a controversial decision to change the company’s product to an adult oriented format now known as the Attitude Era.
